"Cookie Cutter Data Center", blasphemy I say, "I can build a better data center than anyone else, I'll build it myself"! All of us who have grown up as IT folks harbor that feeling of "we can do it better ourselves".

I'm going to be doing a talk on the DCP Stack for Brighttalk virtual events on March 17th. The topic is certainly timely and the goal is to help demonstrate how the Stack can be used to develop a more holistic approach to managing your data center environment.
Please pass the word and join in if you have the chance.

It’s been two weeks now and I’m still trying to get my head wrapped around my role, with a new company. The product we offer creates so many opportunities in the infrastructure & cloud space that my head is constantly spinning with thoughts on more ways the tools can be put to use. In my new role as VP of Data Center Strategy I’ll have several responsibilities, not the least of which is worrying about

There's a growing concern in the Infrastructure community about our ability to take advantage of some of the opportunities associated with Cloud computing. The issue revolves around the generally static nature of our networks and security strategy and how current network solutions will limit our ability to adopt cloud sharing, easy DR, and cross cloud or cross site sharing.

Have you ever struggled to find a particular server in your data center, did someone on the data center or lab staff ever unplug the power or network cable to the wrong server? What about knowing whether your IT equipment is being utilized effectively, how could you tell? Did you view each server through it's resource window, or maybe you walked behind them to see if the network card traffic light was lit up.

The physical structure of a Cumulus cloud doesn't have a fixed border and it can easily change. This basic capability characteristic of adaptability and flexibility should also be applied to a compute cloud.

I read an IDC report a while back that estimated there were upwards of 20 million servers out there that weren't being utilized or that could be consolidated off of and shut down. That same report says that every server creates as much CO2 as 1.5 cars. So after my little brain did the math, I came up with the following; removing 20 million servers equates to removing 30 million cars from our roads and highways. That's 30 Million!

Why is there still so much confusion over the definition of cloud? I have one and I know it's correct, you probably have one and it's correct as well! So who's right, we both are. Saying there's one definition of cloud computing is like saying there's only one way to architect a large ERP implementation or one way to build a Data Center.

I don't have an easy answer to the "data center by surprise' problem and unfortunately I believe this is true for most organizations. In lieu of having all the budget & resource utilization information required to get a complete picture of the cost of our data centers we've started using a very simple model that gets us close.
