The Rise of the Mega Data Center

Source: GigaOM

Behind popular web services such as Facebook, Google and Amazon’s AWS are racks and racks of computers serving up millions of pages or providing raw computing power. The use of thousands of servers to deliver one application or act as a pool of computing resources has changed the way that chipmakers and computer vendors are building their products. It has also led to the rise of the mega data center.

Dell's Data Center Solutions Group

Dell’s Data Center Solutions Group is an interested industry direction; it’s almost like a whitebox/customization server group embedded within Dell. I have not personally used their service as of yet but discussions with them thus far have been extremely technical, well above the par for traditional Tier 1 hardware engineering groups. I think one of the best things they did was bring in folks with hardcore operational experience, rather than just textbook engineers.

RE: Dell

Dell looks quite serious about entering the DC space. It would only make sense for a hardware vendor to enter into the fray, in the same way that the Saudi’s are entering the plastics and polymers market.
